Supporting Local in My Hometown While Being Essential
Ok, guys. Let's talk global pandemic for a moment. This is an uncertain time right now and I know if you're like me, then you may be experiencing some anxiety and fear about the unknown. When will we be able to get together again? When will this end? When will I be able to eat inside my favorite restaurants again? 'Cause, you know... food. If you're considered essential, like I am, then you understand the struggle of not being able to experience life without fear of getting sick. You get sick and tired of the monotonous meals you make and bring to work with you every day. You get sick and tired of not being able to go to your local watering hole or restaurant. Well, if you're local to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, then below are ways you can support your community and yourselves during this trying time.
Eat & Drink Local!
Yes, most of the people in our community either are essential or at home, however, with the pandemic going on if you're like me all you want to do is eat. Well, I mean if I'm eating anyway, why not support a local restaurant by ordering curbside (or delivery because some are offering that). I get that some of you may not have it in your budget to eat out right now, but remember these restaurants when life settles down:
Bird's Eye Outfitters Cafe and GastroPub
Bird's Eye is a unique collection of beer, gear, and coffee. During this time of the pandemic, they are strictly curbside service only. What does that mean? It means you can call them to order your food, coffee, or other beverage (usually a growler to go or canned/bottled product) and pick it up curbside. This is a revolutionary idea for a cafe let alone a gastropub! I highly recommend their Avocado Toasts and their Chicken Quesadillas! They make it super easy to order. Simply view their menu HERE and call (906)259-7121. The staff will take your order, tell approximately how long it will take, and ask you to describe your vehicle. When you pull up to their curbside pick-up, call again and let them know that you are there to pick up your order. This is a super easy and convenient way to get lunch for yourself, staff, or family! During this time of quarantine, their hours are 11-5 Wednesday through Friday and 11-3 on Saturday.
The Wicked Sister
The Wicked Sister is a quaint little restaurant in downtown Sault Ste. Marie. They offer a variety of foods from burgers to salads. They, also, have this thing called "Tot-du-Jour" which is their daily tater tot side option. During this difficult time, they are only open to pick-up and delivery (with-in city limits). My favorites include The Drunken Cow and the Buffalo Chicken Salad. You can view their menu HERE and call (906)259-1086 to place your order. Also, this Friday, April 24th, they will be doing a virtual social distancing tap take over with Short's Brewing Company. Click HERE for more details! Their hours are 11-8 Tuesday through Saturday and 12-8 on Sunday (they stop taking delivery orders at 7:30pm).
Cup of Day
Cup of the Day is a small sandwich and coffee shop. They offer over 79 sandwiches and 24 salads on their menu along with offering a few candies, knick-knacks and coffee mugs. My personal favorite sandwich is the Chicken and Ranch Pannini. I also really enjoy the Mexican Wrap. In quarantine times, they are offering pick-up services. You can view their menu HERE and call (906)635-7272 to order. Also, check out their Facebook Page for offers and deals! Their hours are 7-4 Monday through Friday during this time.
1668 Winery & Lockside Brewery
1668 Winery is one of my favorite hang out spot when we are not staying home. Not only is this great place a winery they also offer food and select brews. My absolute favorite wine is the Pink Moscato, followed closely by the White Cranberry. Check out their wine menu HERE. My favorite brew is the Ermantinger Canadian Stout. Check out their brew menu HERE. This amazing place also offers food. I highly recommend their brats and their Spin Art Dip. Check out their food menu HERE. During this time, they are offering take-out and delivery services (within city limits) for wine, food, and growlers. Call (906)259-5035 to place your order. Their hours are 11:30-9 Monday through Friday.
Soo Brewing Company
Soo brewing company does not offer food, but they are offering growler fills at their sister company 1668 Winery & Lockside Brewery. Check out their beers on tap HERE and call (906)259-5035 between 11:30 and 9.
Listen Local!
One of my favorite things to do is listen to the radio. My favorite station is Eagle 95.1 WUPN. This radio station is locally owned by Tim and Lindsay Ellis and has been my saving grace during this hard time. They are offering wonderful options for listening from Flushing the Format for a Live Request Happy Hour to offering an option for virtual storytime for children. Currently, they are offering something called "You be the PD" where PD = Program Director. Click HERE for more details. My favorite show to listen to right now is their Radio Happy Hour LIVE Request Party. This has grown in popularity these past few weeks. During this show, you can watch Tim and Lindsay live behind the scenes on their Facebook Page and request the song you would like to hear on the radio. Each week they get their dinner and drinks from a local restaurant and take Soo Line Limousine & Taxi Service home after. This Friday they will be getting their food and drinks from The Wicked Sister to support their virtual tap takeover. Definitely check out Eagle 95.1 on your FM radio!
Shop Local!
Some of the businesses that are hit the hardest during this trying time are our local retail shopping. That's why this coming Thursday, April 23rd at 7pm the downtown businesses are having a Virtual Shopping Hour on each of their Facebook Pages. You can watch while they feature the products they have to offer, new products, make announcements, and even doing giveaways! Featured businesses are listed below with the links to their Facebook Pages. Click HERE for my blog post review a few of the stores!

Like I said at the beginning of this post, this quarantine has made us question our lifestyles and new normals. Why not support local while staying home and staying safe. However, I feel the need to do a disclaimer here, if you do not have the ability to support local at this time, DON'T. Just remember to do so after we are allowed out of quarantine! And if you are essential, like me, THANK YOU!
