The Pictured Rocks -- Munising, Michigan
Every year in a small town nestled in Michigan's Upper Peninsula there is an event that happens. Munising Michigan is home to the Pictured Rocks boat tours and every year in early June if your driver's license says you live in an Upper Peninsula county, you get a free ride. I first learned about this almost 5 years ago. I mean I've live my whole life in this beautiful peninsula, how could I not know about this!
I had never been to the Pictured Rocks before this. It was a new, exciting, outdoor adventure for me. I quickly called my friend and we decided to go. Now the key to doing something like this is you need to show up early. Munising is about 2 hours away from where I live so in order to get on a boat, we left at 6am. We made a day of it. Not only is it Yoopers Cruise Free (this year June 8th-9th, 2019), they have vendors and music. They call this festival Pictured Rocks Days. Check out this year's details at www.picturedrocksdays.com
We got to Munising early enough to have breakfast at Hardee's. Yes, they have one there and it is hands down my favorite fast food restaurant. Then we went to find a parking spot. Even though we made it with plenty of time to spare, we still had to wait in line and ended up on the third boat out for the day.
Boy was it ever worth it though. Theses sandstone cliffs radiate with beauty in any weather! If you're a photographer like me (only amateur) this area is a treasure trove of photographic opportunities.
Back to our adventure. After we spent the morning out on the water getting some of these amazing pictures, we went to 3 nearby waterfalls and Miner's Castle. That's the great thing about the UP is you don't have to go far between adventures, especially in this area. There are so many great waterfalls that are just a hop skip and a jump away.
I highly recommend the Pictured Rocks Boat Cruises. Even if you are unable to attend the festival, tickets for the tours are fairly inexpensive for the experience of nature's beauty. You can find out more about pricing here: www.picturedrocks.com
